Olympic Day: How Sport and Sustainability Inspire the Next Generation

Celebrating Olympic Day with Rushbrook Primary Academy: Sport, Sustainability, and the Power of the Next Generation.

Olympic Day at Rushbrook Primary Academy was one of those moments that reminds us exactly why sport and sustainability matter. In partnership with Team GB, the school marked the anniversary of the first-ever Olympic Games with a full day of activity, learning, and inspiration that brought the Olympic spirit to life for every pupil.

Each class represented a different nation, filling the school with colour, energy, and friendly competition. Olympic cyclist Emma Finucane MBE joined the celebrations, leading The Daily Mile, answering questions in assembly, and giving children the unforgettable chance to hold her gold and bronze medals from Paris 2024, along with the London 2012 Olympic Torch. For many, it was their first time meeting an Olympian.

But the day wasn’t just about sport. It was also about understanding the impact behind it.

Our Sustainability Lead, Tom Matthews  delivered a hands-on environmental workshop with Year 5, using our kitround360 calculator to reveal the real footprint behind everyday sports kit. CO2e, water use, and energy consumption were translated into tangible, relatable terms: phone charges, bathtubs of water, and more. The room lit up with curiosity, questions, and that unmistakable spark of young people realising they can make a difference.

It’s a small but powerful example of what circularity in sport looks like in practice. When children understand the story behind their kit, where it comes from, what it costs the planet, and how reuse can change that story, sustainability stops being an abstract concept and becomes something they can act on.

Olympic Day reminded us that the next generation isn’t just ready to engage with circularity. They’re eager for it. And with partners like Rushbrook Primary Academy and Team GB, we’re proud to help build a future where sport and sustainability go hand in hand.
