Who we are?

British Ice Skating is the National Governing Body for ice skating in the UK, responsible for figure skating, ice dance, synchronised skating and speed skating. British Ice Skating exists to grow the sport at every level, from first-time skaters stepping onto the ice to athletes performing on the world stage.

Central to that mission is making ice skating more inclusive, accessible and appealing to young people across the UK.

Why we partnered with kitround

Ice skating is an incredible sport, but it can also be an expensive one. For many families, the cost of proper skates is a genuine barrier to getting started.

British Ice Skating partnered with kitround to help remove that barrier. By giving quality skates a second life, the partnership helps young people access equipment that allows them to experience the sport properly from day one, not just through temporary hire skates, but with boots that support confidence, comfort and progression.

This partnership directly supports British Ice Skating’s work around equality, diversity and inclusion, helping more young people take their first steps on the ice, regardless of background.

Our objectives together

That first experience on the ice is critical. The right equipment can be the difference between a child wanting to come back, or never returning.

By working with kitround, British Ice Skating is helping ensure that young skaters can start their journey with equipment that gives them the best possible chance to enjoy the sport, build confidence and stay involved. Specifically, we aim to:

  • Increase access to affordable ice skates for children and young people
  • Improve the first on-ice experience for beginners
  • Reduce financial barriers to participation in ice skating
  • Support community programmes and introductory pathways into the sport
  • Keep quality sporting equipment in use and out of landfill

“We're proud to work with kitround and hope to inspire more people to get on the ice. With the Winter Olympics approaching, there’s never been a better time to widen access to skating.”

What's next?

British Ice Skating and kitround will continue to work together to grow access to skates, support grassroots programmes and explore new ways to help families overcome the cost barriers associated with ice skating.

Together, we’re focused on getting more kids on the ice, and keeping them there.

Why we exist

In the UK an estimated 100,000 tonnes of sportswear ends up in landfill each year.
